Petco Selling Diseased Animals
Last night I attended a memorial for a rat, which was a little girls pet for over two years. The thirteen year aged was absolutely crushed. I hugged this little girl as she wept and she and her mom to me their story.
In end of February the family bought a rabbit from Petco located on Elmore Avenue in Davenport, Iowa. The rabbit appeared quiet the family made mention to a Petco associate about the rabbit appearing sickly and the associate replied that the rabbit was just very tame and perfect for the little girl.
Of course, any child is going to be excited about the new arrival of a pet and made its home in her bedroom, where the rat also had its habitat. It was within three days of owning the rabbit that the family noticed the rabbit did indeed appear sicklier than before and Petco was then called.
Petco agreed that the rabbit was peaceful under warranty and could be returned without a problem. The rabbit was returned and the mother of the daughter asked for a call back to ensure that the illness was not contagious. A manager promised that this would be no problem at all.
The mother in the mean time waited for the returning call of Petco and when there was not one she called Petco back. It was Curtis a manager at Petco that stated, “The rabbit was only dehydrated and there was nothing that you did or could have done to be able to affect the rabbit’s health. The rabbit’s health was in no way your fault as the rabbit also had a deformity.”
Three days later the family’s pet rat became ill and went to the vet’s office. It was then learned that the rat had contracted a disease from none other than the rabbit that once was homed in the limited girl’s room.
The mother now upset called Petco befriend and asked to speak with a manager, it was Mark that told her that the rabbit had never made it to the vet, and in fact the rabbit died that night.
Now the mother was irritated as she had been lied to about the rabbit’s health which inevitably affected another pet in the home. The vet had explained that the disease also could run rampant enough that many of the other pets could soon be affecting and also once the pet was touched could be carried on the human skin, clothing, hair and other human contact to other homes of pets.
With the lies that were starting to accelerate around between the associates to the mother it was overwhelming to the mother and the child that was dealing with the devastating losses.
I reached the email on the day that the pet rat had passed away and spoke with the family. They had informed me that after much loss and constant sanitizing of the home, they had kept the spreading disease from affecting the last pet that remained in the home, their beloved dog.
Petco was finally reached after two weeks and after many coarse and snotty comments from the Petco employees and corporate as well, the family was reimbursed their money for the vet bill that never would have been presented if Petco would have taken proper care of their sick pets.
The comments that were made from one employee at Petco hinted along the lines of that he didn’t care and to take the pets to the vet. Another comment included that it was objective a rat and a rat was replaceable.
I found that comment to this family uncalled for as I looked upon many people that have different pets, and being a pet lover myself. Pets reach from many species and many people find themselves attached to even a fish. Yes, just a fish. Still what may be dismissive and replaceable to you, isn’t to some people.
When you acquire a pet from any pet stores and the pet does look sickly, I would consider twice about how they want to sweep the illness under the rug. They want to get their sale, and are not necessarily thinking about anything else or they just don’t care as the one guy said there are vets, take it to one.
I will leave you with this advise, take your new obtained pet to the vet immediately, because Petco isn’t going to philosophize you that the pet is sick on purchase.
